Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

I own a HP Compaq 6710s with preinstalled Vista.
After I successfully installed Ubuntu 7.10 sometimes my computer freezes at startup and all I can see is Grub stage 1.5, and it stays that way until I hard restart... usually then it works but sometimes it happens again so I need to hard reset several times to get to Grub menu.
Then again, sometimes everything works from the first attempt. What could be causing this?
What information do you need in order to locate and fix this?

This sounds like a hardware issue. Where exactly does it freeze, what is written to the screen?

"Grub loading stage 1.5" is written on the screen and the cursor is blinking but I cannot type anything and it just stays that way until I hard reset and then it usually loads GRUB without problems... It is very confusing, because I cannot see a pattern.
I tried reinstalling Gutsy but that didn't help.
Could it be a BIOS issue?
I can't remember if it happened with Vista loader (before I installed Ubuntu) because Vista is full of bugs, I probably wouldn't notice...
I would also like to add that this happens approximately once in every ten boot ups.

I am pretty sure it is a hardware problem that we can not solve in software. Please reopen the bug report later if you find evidence of software failure.
