Bug Description

i install kubuntu gutsy (from the cd not an update) and all works good for a couple of startups and then all of the sudden i when i start kubuntu it gets pass the boot splash screen and the screen goes black (its still on but it is only black).

i reinstalled kubuntu (after formating) and it happens again after a few startups so its not just a one time thing

when i try using safe mode it loads the kernel fine but when i try writing kdm to start the gui it turns black again so it think that the problem is somewhere in the kde implementation but im in no way an expert

any one got a clue what going on here?

i should also note that with kubuntu 7.04 it didnt happend to me even once (but i had other problems with it that looked to be fixed in 7.10 so i dont want to go back)

my specs for what it helps are p4 3ghz
512 mb ram and i got an ati x300 graphic card

am i the only one it happens to? can some one confirm or batter yet offer a fix?

on a personal note im getting annoyed with the fact that a great linux distro like kubuntu allways seems to have this huge bug that prevents me from useing it (last time using it my coputer refused to shutdown when tolled to and now he refuses to start-up, can it be my pc is cursed?)

Confirmed.

The same problem with Kubuntu 7.10
Driver "radeon"
Card Radeon 9100

Temporary solution :
1. CTRL+ALT+F1 (go to console)
2. ALT+F7 (go to X org)

Hint:
Driver (?) didn't set up proper resolution/refresh rate ,
when changed in display settings (even to the same param.)
after confirm to change resolution screen goes black and monitor turns off.

Want more information?

Best regards
Cactus

Ps. For me display manager in kubunt is sick. Never work as prefer.
Better is krandrtray alwas work perfectly. Need to check in new kubuntu.

well this is a major problem because after it happens it keeps happening every time i start kubuntu and prevents me from using it at all

i tried your solution cactus but it doesn't work

well i cant use kubuntu at all (this version because of this bug last one because of a bug that kept my pc to shutdown) so unfortunately i am going to go back to windows because i cant use a linux with this huge bugs in it

maybe in 2-3 years there will be a linux that like this just without this huge bugs in it

Please paste your configuration.

1. run system in recovery mode
2. write command :
mcedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(if there is no mcedit instal mc by : apt-get install mc)

3.find line :
Driver "radeon" (or "ati")
change "radeon" or "ati" to "vga"
4. write command :
init 5

5. paste here xorg.conf :) and /var/log/Xorg.log (all as attachment - long files)
