Title bars not displaying on windows on Hardy

Bug Description

I upgraded to Gutsy from Feisty.

I *think* I had title bars initially after I'd enabled Compiz-fusion etc (had a bit of trouble because I'd had Compiz and Beryl installed previously) but I'm sure everything was working. Then, yesterday, I rebooted for the first time, and all the title bars have disappeared - there are no title bars on any windows or dialog boxes. This is irritating at best but frequently renders applications unusable because when a window is unmaximised, it moves up the screen so that the menu bar disappears behind the Ubuntu top toolbar so that you can't access menus. When maximised, you have access to the menus but you still can't easily close a window using the mouse because there is no title bar to contain the X (close) button.

I also occasionally have had Compiz drop title bars.

Try Alt+F2 to bring up the Run Command dialog, then do compiz --replace. That has fixed the issue for me each time this has happened.

I should've provided a bit more information really! I'm on a Samsung Q35. I don't know the exact details but it's an Intel graphics card.

Anyway, since I raised this bug, I tried entering metacity --replace at a shell prompt (Alt+F2 won't work from compiz). Everything's fine then. So then I tried entering compiz --replace (Alt+F2 works in metacity) and I lose the title bars again. It seems to be pretty consistent.

Same problem here. HP510 laptop with Intel graphics (915 I think).
Fresh install of Gutsy, all fine. Turned on Desktop Effects, everything graphicy (I think) worked fine.
The next morning I found this issue. Turning off the sticky edges helps, and using ALT+right click+drag I can pull the window down a bit and the title bar is fine, just wedged under the top gnome panel.
compiz --replace from an ALT+F2 seems to help until a reboot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

In the time it's taken me to download and test this with Hardy Alpha 4, Alpha 5 has come out! I'm going to try and test with Alpha 5 too but in the meantime...

The window manager loaded fine with Alpha 4 live CD. The title bars were displaying fine, and I enabled the Advanced Desktop Effects and wobbly windows worked fine too. The only thing that was slightly odd was that before I enabled the advanced desktop effects, with the default (basic) desktop effects, the title bar was blue and the font looked slightly large. As soon as I switched to the advanced version (enabling wobbly windows), the title bar went to the normal brown ubuntu theme. So something's still not quite right in terms of look and feel but functionally it seems fine.

Just tested in Alpha 5 and all is well (including the fonts and weird theme). I think this bug is well and truly fixed. :)

Thanks!

I had the same problem of application title bars not displaying after a fresh install of hardy beta on a desktop with nvidia GeForce 2mx 32mb, using the alternate install cd. I installed the nvidia drivers and still had the same issue. The default install sets the visual effects (system - preferences - appearance) to 'normal'. When I changed from 'normal' to 'none' the title bars displayed correctly.

I've done a fresh installation of Hardy (downloaded on 26th April) and this problem has returned. :(

When I switch to Basic or Extra in the Appearance dialog, the title bars disappear again. It's as if switching the settings actually stops the window manager.
