Bug Description

On Ubuntu MATE 16.04 one can select 4 compositing modes via MATE Tweak (german translation):
1. Marco (kein Komposit)
2. Marco (Programmkomposit)
3. Marco (Compton GPU-Komposit)
4. Compiz (anspruchsvolle Schreibtischeffekte mit GPU-Beschleunigung)

On my PowerMac7,3 G5 with a Radeon 9650 Pro only the 1st one works properly. The 2nd one works, but more sluggish and a jerkier mouse pointer. 3 and 4 trash the desktop showing wrong colours. Only VERY jerky mouse movement is possible then. The desktop is no longer in a usable state any longer, you can't click on anything. Restarting the desktop with "systemctl restart lightdm" from console returns the desktop usable (defaulting to 1st compositor.

ernsteiswuerfel, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

1) To clarify, you have which mac precisely from the list in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518 ?

2) Is there something missing when you choose 1 that you don't get from the other three?

1) It is not on the list you linked. It is a http://identimac.com/modelDetails/PowerBook%20G4/4.html
Same problem on my PowerMac G5 (http://identimac.com/modelDetails/Power%20Mac%20G5/5.html) with a Radeon 9650 (http://www.welovemacs.com/atig59650.html).

2) I am missing a flicker and tearingfree desktop experience (e.g. browsing, watching videos, moving windows around). Well, of course it's a nice to have and no must. "Compton GPU composit" provides the best desktop experience, at least it does on my amd64 box with newer AMD graphics hardware.

ernsteiswuerfel, to advise, this report is focused on one model only (PowerMac G5). For additional machines, please file one report per machine, per issue.

To clarify my previous question, is there a positive feature from 2.-4. that isn't available in 1.?

Yes, composting.

Means a more usable task switcher. And desktop/icon animations.

This is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1432949

With the upstream patch applied on mesa GPU compositors started working on my PowerMac 7,3.
