brightness doesent work/ dell 1501 inspiron

Is this Kubuntu or Ubuntu? Which version?
Can you provide data as requested in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuLaptopKeycodes ?

I am using Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Final. Dell Bios 2.4.1, which i just updated
to from 1.7.

Using a different bios then 1.7 will work in Hardy at the moment.

Christoforever, care to comment if this is still an issue in the latest Hardy Alpha release? If this is resolved, please feel free to close this report (ie change the status to 'Fix Released') Thanks.

Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.20.0
Ubuntu 7.10 amd64

The applet doesn't work, but running the following command as root does work.
echo -n [brightness] > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
where [brightness] is one of: 12 25 37 50 62 75 87 100

It turns out the acpi signal is received by the hook, only it is not processed correctly. I used the brightness setting suggested by Orson Jones (above) and connected to the acpi signals for the Fn+Up/Down shortcuts. Take a look: http://cerebraloverflow.com/wp/?p=129

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10).
