Bug Description

Networked 'nedit' sessions display textual artifacts when "scrolling up". The best way I can describe the artifacts is that groups of text lines are repeated throughout the window.

Steps to reproduce:

ssh -Y somecomputer
nedit somefile.txt <--- do this on the remote computer

When nedit opens, scroll down to the middle of some text, then scroll up with either the mouse scroll wheel or using the keyboard up arrow to see the visual artifacts.

I have tried this with several remote computers all with different operating systems and different versions of nedit.

If I run nedit locally on my machine, these artifacts do not occur.

Also, I never had this problem before updating my computer from Feisty to Gutsy last week. I also tried using a different text editor remotely (xemacs), but this did not suffer the same problems.

My computer is running Kubuntu (Gutsy), with two monitors and an NVIDIA video card.

I also forgot to mention, the artifacts go away when you "scroll down". They scroll off the top of the screen like normal text and good text comes in from the bottom. As soon as you scroll up again, however, the entire screen is filled with repeated text once again.

I started retracing my steps with regards to settings I had changed since upgrading to Gutsy, and this change fixed the problem:

Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

I changed this to:

Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

And the weird nedit problem went away. I had enabled the composite option while messing around with compiz stuff (couldn't quite get it working). Apparantly even having the "Composite" option enabled in the Xserver causes some weird problems.

Hi kleber,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

I put "composite" back in my xorg.conf today and I no longer see that specific problem.

On one of my monitors, however, I noticed the 'nedit' scroll bar sometimes flickers and doesn't show up. This was not the case with composite disabled.

In any case, the problem seems to be better. Should this new problem be opened as a new bug report or as a continuation of this one? My Xorg.0.log and lspci -vvnn is attached.
