Wireless overheats if Ubuntu left at login screen

OK, so not sure where to ask/report this, but when I brought it up at the Ubuntu Forums they said I definitely need to mention it here.
I use a Netgear Wireless USB adapter (WG111v2). I run Ubuntu 7.10. I use linux everyday and several different flavours on different boxes so I'm fairly knowledgeable about the basics.
So, the problem:
When I leave my computer on the login screen when I first boot, say for an hour or so, my wireless adapter heats up to burning point. I literally cannot pick it up. If I log in, it won't see/connect to any networks. I imagine that is because the adapter has overheated.
If I log in as soon as I boot or restart after it overheats, it cools down and is fine.
Is it possibly a process in Ubuntu which would repeatedly and without limit, try and access the adapter? Could it be scanning for APs until I login?
Just thought I would pipe up in case others were in the same boat.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
