Bug Description

This bug is connected to bug #145753 in which my partitions were spontaneously renumbered and their uuids changed, so that /dev/hde6 (root partition) and /dev/hde5 (swap) became /dev/hde5 and /dev/hde6 respectively.

On upgrading to Gutsy I found that grub kept giving me error 17. It turned out that it was now trying to boot from hd(0,5) (i.e. /dev/hde6 - it's on the second ata bus)), rather than hd(0,4). The uuid for the root partition was wrong as well. I presume that what had ended up in menu.lst was the correct one from before the spontaneous renumbering. The uuids for / and swap in /etc/fstab were still correct. In other words grub ended up configured in a way that would have worked before the spontaneous renumbering, but won't work now.

Please make this a high priority. Issues like this are blockers.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
