login sound stutters

Bug Description

Ubuntu 7.10 desktop live cd

I boot the cd (default boot menu option) and when it gets to the desktop login, the login sounds has two pauses about half a second long.
That is : sound ... pause ... sound ... pause ... sound

hardware : HP Compaq nw8440 laptop (Core2 Duo T7200, 2 GB RAM)

Similar when running inside vmware (on another PC).

This happens to me as well. I am running on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Sound card is:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

Sorry, I should also mention - this is from a clean install of ubuntu 8.04
