Bug Description

Two days ago I upgraded my Feisty to Gutsy. The following ntp-related packages were installed:

ii ntp 4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 Network Time Protocol daemon and utility pro
ii ntp-simple 4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 transition package
ii ntpdate 4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 client for setting system time from NTP serv
ii tzdata 2007f-0ubuntu0.7.4 Time Zone and Daylight Saving Time Data

I then brought Feisty up to date, and upgraded to Gutsy afterwards.
During the upgrade, Gutsy claimed that ntp was no longer needed or obsolete, and removed it.

Excerpt from dpkg.log:
2007-10-28 21:57:53 upgrade ntpdate 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 1:4.2.4p0+dfsg-1ubuntu2
2007-10-28 22:09:34 upgrade ntp 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 1:4.2.4p0+dfsg-1ubuntu2
2007-10-28 22:50:28 conffile /etc/ntp.conf install
2007-10-28 23:21:59 remove ntp-simple 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3 1:4.2.2.p4+dfsg-1ubuntu3
2007-10-28 23:22:00 remove ntp 1:4.2.4p0+dfsg-1ubuntu2 1:4.2.4p0+dfsg-1ubuntu2

However, after a reboot of the new system, the System->Administration->TimeAndDate panel claimed the configuration was still set on "Keep synchronized with Internet servers"

Maybe the problem is that ntp-simple got canceled?

I manually reinstalled ntp now.

There must be a reason when Ubuntu says packages are obsolete. Maybe other packages were installed instead of them that can do the same job. Did you actually have a problem with your clock?

My understanding is that ntpdate is a simplified version of ntp/ntpd. It is said somewhere that ntpdate is suitable for environments such as laptops which are not connected 24/7 to the internet. However, I have a desktop, sometimes running as server, and a flat fee internet connection, in which case ntpd is more suitable.
Furthermore, ntpdate seems to be less relevant than ntp and even scheduled for deletion ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-tools-backends/+bug/83604/comments/14 )

I cannot uninstall ntpdate and only keep ntp, since that would break ubuntu-minimal and therefore the whole automatic update/dependency process.
There also seem to be other dependency problems involving the ntpdate/ntp pair (e.g., bug #83604).

Yes, starting with that Gutsy upgrade, my clock update ran havoc, see bug #91418 and especially bug #158664.

So I do not believe this bug is invalid.
(Unless you tell me there is a third, unknown method besides ntpdate and ntp that has been automatically installed my Gutsy?)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. ntp-simple has been discontinued since feisty, and there may have been dependency issues that caused ntp to be removed. Have you since upgraded to the latest Ubuntu release, Hardy Heron? If so, have you had any ntp issues with this latest release? Thanks in advance.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in ntp.

Just to give some feedback, I am now running Hardy, have ntp and ntpdate installed, and the previous time switch worked without problems.
