Vmware tools install fails in Ubuntu 7.10, does not respond

Bug Description
installation of vmware tools appears to be failing, there is no status info and the system seems to be calculating
but after 5 mins, vmware tools has still not installed.
running 7.10..
this issue seems to be of fair importance as, many users at this end try to evaluate ubuntu as a virtual machine
