Could you please attach the output of xrandr? Maybe a recheck with the Gutsy Live CD would be great.

I am closing this bug since it doesn't seems to be one.
Please use System - Preferences - Screen Resolution to choose 1440x900. I guess the old resolution was saved from previous Ubuntu version. If you not sure recheck it with the Live CD. It should have the correct resolution out of the box.
Feel free to open it again if it still happens with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 Live CD and a resolution change to 1440x900 isn't possible.

Btw. it would be better to add "1440x900" to your Modes section in front of "1280x1024". Otherwise it is possible that the login screen has the wrong resolution.
Does it work for you?

My problem in still the same: When i change the resolution to 1440x900 (with
the GIU-tool) the picture doesn't cover my screen (the left part of the
screen is black). I tried doing the same running from the gutsy live-CD with
the _same_result. Thus, my problem still seems unresolved.

Probably this is a duplicate of Bug #148208 . Could you please recheck your problem with Hardy Alpha 4 Live CD? You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha4 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-4/ .
