Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpi

I just changed to gutsy on my Acer TravelMate 292LCi (BIOS v2.00 (latest)). It is a new installation, but i was using feisty on the same hardware already.

Suspend/Resume used to work ok on this hardware, but sometimes i got a notification message that there was a suspend problem. I also had to restart the computer sometimes after resume because the network wouldn't come back up properly again (and "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" would not restore it).

After upgrading to gutsy, however, the computer won't even suspend any more. The screen goes blank, then the fan goes up to full speed for a while, but it never suspends completely. Then, when i reboot, my USB keyboard will not work in grub. So i have to turn of the computer and unplug the battery and AC adapter before i reconnect the power and restart the computer.

I have discovered that the problem will be different if i kill skype before i suspend the computer. If i do that, the computer will suspend and resume. The problem is instead that the screen does not update anymore. However, I can make the icons on my desktop visible if i move the mouse over them.

Best regards,
Hans Elfberg

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10?

I'm have not yet upgraded to 8.10. I'm currently on 8.04.

Up until very recently, i have been required to live with suspend/hibernate problems by quitting Firefox and Skype. At certain times, with some versions, unplugging all USB devices has also been an improvement. I have avoided rebooting the computer for several days by using these work-around procedures.

However, i tried suspend/hibernate again before this reply, and it seams to work fine even with Firefox and Skype running now, only the connection to my external USB hard drive did not get properly restored after waking up from hibernate.

My suspend/hibernate problems came back yesterday, so i tried to figure out what changes i had made in between. I thought the latest kernel module upgrade would be a possible reason why the problem came back, so decided to see if "sudo update-initramfs -u" would make any difference.

Suspend/resume seams to work again after that.

My 8.04 installation started to have problems again, so i installed 8.10 instead. I have still had problems if i suspended/hibernated my computer while programs such as firefox or skype is running, but it has always worked if those particular programs have not been running. I suppose it's ok to close this bug, at least for 8.10.
