Bug Description

This is a list I made from 2 years of Ubuntu and selling computers with it. This is current with Gutsy.

Packages needed by default in Ubuntu:
gocr spamassassin firestarter alsa-oss

Thing to make Ubuntu better:
1. The ability to just click on the balloon to update
2. totem-gstreamer support for DVDs and VCDs with menus
3. Mouse extra button detection
4. FreeDOS boot disk creator ( for BIOS flashing and such )
5. Reminders to open up ports with firestarter
6. Automatic virus detector ( for windows-linux-windows file sharing)
7. Total ipod and support for Rhythmbox
8. Auto dpkg repair when it is interupted (auto-run gksudo "dpkg --configure -A")
9. Free version of flash and java and firefox pluguns installed by default (for 64-bit support).
10. Open-Source NVIDIA and ATI graphics drivers with 3D acceleration enabled by default.
11. NTP clock time by default
12. Rhythmbox conversion support.
13. Auto encrypted DVD installer
14. Encrypted HD-DVD and Blu-ray support
15. WINE integration (to install Windows programs)
16. Python 3D support by default.
17. A Ogg Music Store in Rhythmbox
18. A sync feature to portable players in Rhythmbox
19. Video and video pod-cast support in Rhythmbox
20. Auto Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN setup in Evolution Mail
21. Total 64-bit support
22. A low end option requiring a 512MHz processor, no graphics acceleration, and 64MB of RAM should be available on a separate CD.
23. Use OpenDNS servers as the default DNS servers.
24. Add preview function in java and HTML upload (for emailing photos).
25. Allow any user to eject a cd. ex. User "Bob" wants to listen to some music. But user "Jill" left her cd in. So "Bob presses the button on the cd drive. Confused he right clicks the cd and says eject, only to find a "scary" error message.
26. Totem and Rhythmbox fused into a i-tunes like program.

Bugs:
1. Sound Recorder "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings." This message should be more specific.

2. A warning should appear if my graphics card doesn't support 3D acceleration in a certain resolution.

3. Some Actiontec routers from Quest require IPV6 to be disabled in order to function. Adding #23 would also solve the problem. (tested)

4. Burnable CDs are detected as "CD-ROM disks" in 64-bit version of Ubuntu

5. Live cd should use 1024 x 768 if autodetection fails.

6. When I change my resolution, it should change all my resolutions. (bootscreen, login window. grub, etc.)

Thank You for Reading! If you need any help email me at <email address hidden>. I only know shell programing!

I could have made 31 separate entries, but I thought this would be easier.

Hi Trevor, thanks for reporting this bug. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to mark it as "Invalid", however, as some of the content of the report isn't appropriate for the bug tracker (for the following reasons):

 * All issues should be reported separately. This makes it much easier for people to track, discuss and fix individual problems. Discussion of 31 issues on one bug report would soon turn into a complete mess, and it would be impossible to mark just one point as fixed if someone was working on it.
 * Requesting packages to be included by default is difficult, because there's not much space left on the CD. It would probably be best to discuss this with the Desktop team [1] and then file individual wishlist bugs or blueprints [2].
 * You need to provide justification for some of the issues, as it's not obvious what would be gained from implementing them, or whether the issue is in great demand.
 * Some of the issues have already been addressed/implemented in some way (e.g. 17)
 * Some of the issues go against specific design decisions and policies which have already been made, e.g. (19, 26 - Rhythmbox and Totem are specifically designed to be separate, single-purpose programs. The Rhythmbox developers are unlikely to add video support)

Also, it's important to not set the Status or Importance of your own bugs. Otherwise, it would be impossible to tell which bugs had been independently confirmed and which hadn't. You can find more information on how to report bugs here [3].

Your feedback is valuable and I see a lot of good ideas which need to be discussed further, but unfortunately the bug tracker isn't the right place for many of them. I'll reply further later today in order to help you send the feedback to the most appropriate places.

Thanks,

Phil

Ok. I'll only report the ones that are most important. I do realize you are running out of space, but the programs I suggested should fit on a standard floppy.

Thanks. Please let me know if you'd like a hand reporting the bugs or creating a blueprint.

Don't forget that most packages have a few dependencies too, so while spamassassin may only be 1MB in size, its 10 dependencies take up another 1MB and so on. When you consider that the Desktop CD for Gutsy is already at 695.8/700MB and the size of current packages is likely to increase during the Hardy release cycle, we don't have much space to play with at all. Of course, other packages could be removed to create space for some of the packages that you propose.

The most important problems in my opinion:
The package spamassassin should be a dependency of Evolution Mail because it's the default spam filter. The package alsa-oss should be a dependency of wine because some wine programs require oss and alsa-oss would fill the void. The firestarter package is needed because most people need a GUI on a firewall to feel protected. Gocr should be a dependency of xsane because it needs this program to save text files.

Allow any user to eject a cd. ex. User "Bob" wants to listen to some music. But user "Jill" left her cd in. So "Bob presses the button on the cd drive. Confused he right clicks the cd and says eject, only to find a "scary" error message .

Auto dpkg repair when it is interupted (auto-run gksudo "dpkg --configure -A") You can't believe how many calls I get on this!

FreeDOS boot disk creator ( for BIOS flashing and such )

totem-gstreamer support for DVDs and VCDs with menus

   Mouse extra button detection

   Auto encrypted DVD installer

Use OpenDNS servers as the default DNS servers.

Less important (in my opinion):
  Everything except above, 7, 14, 15, 18, 19, and 26.

I strongly believe however, that one media manager would cause less confusion and bugs.

Notes:
   Please disregard the bugs section.

I do realize that some are unreasonable. I myself have a hard time sorting what I want. I also realize some things are already being worked out.

I can not do all the bug reports by myself. Some help would be appreciated. Sort through what you want and post. Then we can work out what each of us will do.

 * Evolution depending on spamassassin: see Bug 4472 for discussion
 * Wine depending on alsa-oss: Should probably form part of the BetterIntegratedWine spec (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BetterIntegratedWineSpec). However, this appears to have stalled. Might be worth reporting a wishlist bug against Wine.
 * Xsane depending on gocr: XSane suggests gocr, but doesn't have a hard dependency. Also, Xsane is getting old and may soon be replaced by GNOME Scan or Flegita. Needs further investigation, possibly worth a new bug.
 * Users ejecting CDs: This looks to be a new bug.
 * dpkg repair: There is a spec for this (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/automatic-dpkg), but it looks neglected. Maybe worth a new wishlist bug against dpkg.
 * FreeDOS boot disk: This appears to be new. Is this a common requirement?
 * totem-gstreamer DVD support: see Bug 41335
 * Mouse extra button detection: This would seem to be a difficult task. It might be worth asking one of the X guys about this, and then maybe to create a new spec.
 * Encrypted DVD installer: see bug 157099
 * OpenDNS servers: I'm not sure what you mean by this. Could you elaborate a little more, please?
 * iPod support in Rhythmbox: This is a job for upstream. What sort of problems are there currently with Rhythmbox's iPod integration?
 * HD-DVD/Bluray support: See the wiki (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD). I don't think that we have the resources to implement HD-DVD/Bluray support for gstreamer ourselves, unfortunately.
 * Wine integration: In what ways is Wine integration currently lacking? The inclusion of the Wine Doors package would probably help. There are Ubuntu packages, but the authors don't seem to have submitted them to REVU. It might be worth poking them.
 * DAP sync feature in Rhythmbox: This would be best handled upstream. An enhancement bug should be filed in GNOME Bugzilla.
 * Rhythmbox is strictly a music player. Perhaps a video podcast plugin for Totem should be requested?
 * Totem/Rhythmbox fused: There are several other available applications which are combined media players which could be sought as replacements. I agree that it can be confusing having two media players installed sometimes. However, GNOME seem pretty keen on having separate applications to keep everything task-focused (RB is a 'manager', Totem is a 'viewer'), and RB/Totem are pretty feature-rich on their own, so a replacement might not cut it. This would be a good question for the gnome-usability list.
