Bug Description

On upgrading from 7.04 to 7.10, I now experience a very slow boot time (about 3 to 4 minutes).

On boot up, the splash screen appears as normal with the progress bar.
The progress bar freezes very early on (after about 1 to 3 filled in bars - varies).
The bar stays in this position for 3 to 4 minutes, before continuing on to the end to complete the boot.

Have seen other bugs with similar problems, but none of the solutions made any difference, or didn't seem applicable.

I have been using ubuntu for about a year now, and this is the first time I've reported a bug.
If there's more info needed, let me know. I have included dmesg.log and lspci-vvnn.log.

Hi Kenny,

Thank you for your report. I'm retargeting this bug towards the upcoming Hardy kernel and have tagged it as "hardy-kernel-candidate". Also, rather than inlining your lspci -vvnn and dmesg output, can you attach the information? It makes it easier for us to parse. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policies, please refer to:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

Note that against the linux-source-2.6.22 package this is being marked as "Won't Fix" as it does not meet the criteria for a stable release update. To learn more about the stable release update process please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in testing Hardy Heron.

Tried to boot using the Live CD and it failed to install. After splash screen, drops into Busy Box and displays the same errors reported above:
[41.108000] ata2.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
[41.108000] ata2.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)

I have a very old DELL XPS T600, and looks like other people with DELLs are having similar problems. I have tried all suggested boot options, but none of them work. The other solution appears to be changing the BIOS settings but these options do not appear to be obvious on this machine.

As my hardware configuration worked fine with 6.06/7.04, but doesn't with 7.10/8.04, I was loathe to change my hardware to fix what obviously seems like a software problem.

Anyway, removing the power to the CD-Writer YAMAHA CRW8424E, and making the TOSHIBA DVD-ROM the Secondary IDE Master, allowed me to successfully boot up the 8.04 Live CD.

To burn CD's I am left with the situation of having to reconnect the CD-Writer, and then boot up into Windows.

It appears that this CD-Writer is now not compatible with Ubuntu.
Is there any possible way to get it working again with Ubuntu?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hello there,

To overcome the problems I've been having above, I have changed my CD-writer, from the Yamaha CRW8424E that was causing the problems, to a more up to date make/model that was unused in another PC.

My new system seems to be quite happy using Hardy. No boot problems, CD-writer is recognised, and can burn CDs.

To check that the above kernel change has fixed the problem, would be difficult:
a. I'd have to change the CD-writer back to the Yamaha
b. I have limited download limit on my broadband
c. I'm sure that the Yamaha CD-writer CRW8424E is just not compatible anymore

Thanks

Thanks for the update kenny. It sounds like things are working for you now. I agree that it would seem a bit much to test when you are no longer using the old CD-writer. Lets just go ahead and close this report. Thanks.
