grub-pc fails to upgrade to 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1.12

Bug Description
Tried to make a normal upgrade today but apt-get always hangs on grub-pc. I killed all the processes forced the lock open manually again and tried 'dpkg reconfigure -a' and 'sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/
sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub-pc
[sudo] password for <user>:

After 2 hours of lost time I found the courage to do the following which seem to have solved the issue:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo reboot
After that the update and upgrade ran without problems
