Bug Description

Hello All,

I am in a peculiar situation where I need to burn source code images onto DVDs. I downloaded the following images below;

http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/trusty/source/ubuntu-14.04-src-1.iso
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/trusty/source/ubuntu-14.04-src-2.iso
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/trusty/source/ubuntu-14.04-src-3.iso

and tried to use Brasero with re-writable DVDs that are 4.7GB. The issue is that the source code images are too large for DVDs. This affects /ubuntu-14.04-src-1.iso and /ubuntu-14.04-src-2.iso which are 4.8GB instead of the reported sizes in Index of /releases/trusty/source which states that they are 4.5GB.

For /ubuntu-14.04-src-3.iso in Index of /releases/trusty/source the stated size is 4.2GB but once downloaded it is 4.5GB which is not that much of an issue as it will fit on a DVD. I wanted to let you know as other individuals may come across this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1633460/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

The sizes reported on the web index are given in GiB, not in GB. The '4.5G' is therefore correct.

I can confirm that the images are oversized for writing to a DVD, as the standard DVD size limit is 4700372992 and the images you reference are of sizes 4783419392 and 4819716096.

It doesn't appear that there is any logic in the publisher to ensure these images fit on a DVD when published (and any logic in the image builder is off). This would probably be a reasonable thing to enforce; considering that we are creating multiple images, it seems that we would want the individual images to fit on a DVD.

We would not change this retroactively for the images that have already been released (up to and including bionic), but we should be able to fix this going forward.
