Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

I recently changed motherboard and started using the nVIDIA GeForce 6150 graphics card which comes bundled with ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard.

When running from live CD a resolution of 800x600 is used while my monitor supports upto 1440x900. I thought this was because the binary nVIDIA fdriver was not installed. I installed to the hard disk and using "Restricted Driver Manager", installed the nvidia-glx-new package and restarted the system. Still the low resolution was kept. So I thought changing the resolution in "Monitor & Display" section will fix it.

However, to my shock 800x600 and 640x480 were the only two resolutions offered in the settings module. The slider was at its right most end.

Of course, Windows too did not pick the right resolution automatically after installing driver. At least I was able to set the right resolution graphically easily.

Then I had to run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to fix it. Though I have managed it because I know how to fix it, this can be intimidating for new users wanting to try Kubuntu on their new hardware. This may even make them avoid trying Kubuntu in future.

I have a suggestion (which may not be easily implementable). Just list all possible normal and widescreen resolutions and use the hardware detection only to choose the default resolution. If necessary the user must be allowed to choose a higher resolution.

Has no other nVIDIA card user with a widescreen monitor experienced this?

I'm not able to confirm it as working as I cannot install Apha version. Will definitely confirm once the final release is out.
