Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

7.10, fresh install from desktop i386 CD, all updates through Nov 18 applied, 1.3GHz Athlon XP 1500+, abit NF7II board, 1GB ram. No other software installed.
Using the GUI and Synaptic, I added the repository deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture,org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu gutsy
(you see that this is malformed with a comma after pculture and no / after gutsy). After clicking on the Reload whirl, I got an error message saying I had a malformed entry, and the only option was to close the error box. But this also closed Synaptic. I tried reopening Synaptic a couple of times and each time the same error box came up immediately and prevented me from removing or correcting the bad entry.
(I finally opened a terminal window and edited /etc/apt/sources.list by hand.)

I feel that the program logic before and/or after the error message should be changed so that correction could be effected without leaving Synaptic.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? I tried to reproduce this using Xubuntu 8.04.1, but was able to make the changes in Synaptic Package Manager.

(Same machine, 7.10 was wiped a couple of months ago, now has Ubuntu 8.04.1) The Synaptic GUI for Ubuntu 8.04.1 looks different from what I remember of 7.10, and the 8.04.1 GUI is rather different from the 6.06 one that I have on another machine.
However, putting this same particular malformed url into the 8.04 GUI still causes Synaptic to complain with error boxes, I am asked to return to the window where I add/remove sources in order to correct the errors, and I cannot do so: I can't go back without closing the error box, and that fully closes Synaptic. The only way I get a functional machine back is to go into a terminal and edit /etc/apt/sources.list.
I don't yet have X or K buntu to try.

Behavior unchanged in Hardy, still fails in the same way. I reported to
Launchpad.

I did find another bug in Ubuntu Hardy, but couldn't figure out whether
it was already known, nor how to report it. Any suggestions? It is the
Molecule screensaver. The first time that the screensaver is run, it
does some preliminary "calculating molecules" which freezes the
machine. I have no keyboard, no mouse, no terminal windows (not even
from ctrl-alt-Fn) no ctrl-alt-backspace to get out of X, nothing. Just
a full black screen wint "Calculating Molecules " at the top. I suspect
it's a peculiarity of the video card (ATI Rage 128), but have neither
the skill nor resources to really track this down. Molecules works
great on Dapper/Nvidia.

I much appreciate your thoughtfulness in contacting me on the Synaptic
glitch.

Sincerely, Charles A. McCarthy

I think you should report the screensaver bug to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/gnome-screensaver

They handle issues involving them.

Thanks for helping!

I am changing the package to synaptic and marking this as a duplicate of Bug 71028. Perhaps the information here will help.
