Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-xen

No idea, what caused the problem. Suddenly input from the keyboard wasn't evaluated anymore (first kernel oops on this machine, which runs Linux for > 3 weeks now).

In the kernel's message buffer I found following:
--8<--

xen-hypervisor-3.1 is used, as well as linux-image-2.6.22-14-xen (in the only domain at that time).
Unusual hardware: a Blackberry was being charged at the USB port (occasionally the USB stack seems to get confused about that device and udevd goes bezerk (/var/log/udevd is 162MiB in size).

I should mention that this is a AMD dual core Athlon 64 with 4GiB of RAM sporting Ubuntu 7.10/amd64.

Hi Guenthert,

Thank you for your report. I'm tagging this report as 'hardy-kernel-candidate' so we make sure to carry this forward to the upcoming Hardy kernel. I know you mentioned you weren't quite sure what triggered this. Has anything appeared again in the last few days?

Well next day it crashed again, see Bug #164153. Since then I run 2.6.22-14-generic #1, i.e. without Xen. It didn't crash yet since, but this bug didn't occur using Xen for several weeks either. Thanks for asking though.

I'm opened a new task against the actively developed kernel which is the Hardy Heron kernel. The Hardy Heron Alpha2 release should be coming out shortly (Dec 20). However, I'm not sure if there will be a xen image which you can test with. I'll try to update this report when I see it is available. Thanks!

Hi Guenthert,

Sorry for such a delayed response! I finally noticed that a xen image is available for Hardy: linux-image-2.6.24-7-xen. Care to give it a test and see if this issue still exists? Thanks.

Also just adding a note that we'll keep this report open against the actively developed kernel but against linux-source-2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
