Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 and enigmail 0.95.0

When you have to enter a password for a encryption key, the window to type it in opens behind thunderbird. I press send and nothing happens. It's only when I look at the window list bar do I see the flashing 'Passphrase' window.

This window should open in front of all open windows, especially thunderbird, since you can't send your email until you enter it.

There is a similar problem on 2.0.0.12, however, I'm not sure it even opens a window for the password prompt, or if it did, it did not show up on the task bar at all. I was expecting a prompt for the passphrase and never saw it.

I can now verify that under Hardy there is no window opened to request the passphrase. Plus, when I go into Preferences / Encryption / Remember PGP Passphrases, the message "A supported PGP passphrase caching agent is not running" is the only indication of a problem.

When trying to send a signed message, there is no passphrase prompt and there is no error message indicating that it could not sign the message. All indications are that there is a remote server problem, not an encryption failure.

Enigmail 2:0.95.0-0ubuntu4

I'm having the exact same problem as Rory McCann; when my secret key is encrypted with a passphrase, the prompt asking for the password (or asking to use the cached password) appears behind Thunderbird. This is really annoying since it freezes Thunderbird, and it's not obvious why until you notice the flashing passphrase prompt in the window list.

so does anyone have the part that says something like "Use Master Password" checked. (cheaked == are you using the master password to keep all your passwords within Thunderbird) please look in Pref. to make sure IIRC its in security section of Prefs.

John,

Yes, I have that checked. When Thunderbird prompts me for the password upon loading the program, the password prompt appears normally (has focus, on top of all the Thunderbird windows). It's only Enigmail that has the problem of displaying the password prompt beneath all the other Thunderbird windows.

Ok, I noticed that I had "Extra" selected on Visual Effects in the Appearance Preferences box. If I select "None", the enigmail popup appears above the other windows correctly. For some reason, the window has focus (if I type, characters appear in the password prompt) but the window titlebar is not highlighted orange like a selected window If I click on the prompt, it highlights correctly.

If I switch Visual Effects back to "Extra" or to "Normal", the popup appears below Thunderbird again. Perhaps it isn't working correctly with compiz because the password prompt isn't getting the correct kind of focus?

This is a setting in compiz if i remember correctly. I will change this
to a compiz bug since its not show outside compiz.

Confirmed for me in Intrepid

Thunderbird: 2.0.0.17 (20080925)
Enigmail: 2:0.95.0-0ubuntu5

If I set compiz (visual effects) to extra or normal, the prompt window appears behind Thunderbird. With no effects, the prompt appears correctly.

This is still an issue in Jaunty

Thunderbird: 2.0.0.21 (20090409)
Enigmail: 2:0.95.7-1ubuntu2

although I suspect the version numbers don't matter as it is likely to be an issue with compiz

OK this bug was marked a duplicate of 165161 and that one says the problem is fixed. I've made mention on that bug that the special condition of Thunderbird and Enigmail are still not working when the passphrase is asked for.

It *is* fixed--in Karmic, not Jaunty.
