Bug Description

After installing kde4 packages, all of the applications fail to start. They report a missing library libkdeprint ...

$ /usr/lib/kde4/bin/karbon
/usr/lib/kde4/bin/karbon: error while loading shared libraries: libkdeprint.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Actually, it looks like libkdefx may also be missing ...

$ ldd /usr/lib/kde4/bin/karbon | grep "not found" | sort | uniq
        libkdefx.so.5 => not found
        libkdeprint.so.5 => not found

There may also be a problem with libkpty:

$ ldd /usr/lib/kde4/bin/dolphin | grep "not found" | sort | uniq
        libkdeprint.so.5 => not found
        libkpty.so => not found

$ ldd /usr/lib/kde4/bin/konsole | grep "not found" | sort | uniq
        libkdeprint.so.5 => not found
        libkpty.so => not found

Same here. I'm unable to run any of the KDE-PIM apps. Other applications just work fine. Kind of strange behaviour. ;)

I have the same problem. Two days ago I installed KDE 4. From this time I can't run PIM application such as Kontact, but some of them work fine (konsole, konqueror, etc.).

$ kontact
kontact: error while loading shared libraries: libkdeprint.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have installed the newest KDE packages from http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu :
Package: kde4base Version: 3.94.0-0ubuntu1
Package: kde4base-data Version: 3.94.0-0ubuntu1
Package: kde4base-dev Version: 3.94.0-0ubuntu1
Package: kde4-core Version: 3.3~gutsy1~ppa1
Package: kdelibs5 Version: 4:4.0.0-0ubuntu2~gutsy1~ppa1

$ ldd /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kontact | grep "not found" | sort | uniq
        libkdeprint.so.5 => not found
        libkpty.so => not found

Maybe I did something wrong?

kde4base is an old beta package, you should remove it.
The packages that replace it are kdebase-runtime and kdebase-workspace, see the instructions here: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php

Changed in kde4base:
status: New → Invalid

I see that libkdeprint.so.5 is currently included in the file list for the gutsy version of the kdelibs5 package, but not in the hardy version.

Gutsy: http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/i386/kdelibs5/filelist
Hardy: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/i386/kdelibs5/filelist

And if you look at the package version "kdelibs5 (3.94.0-0ubuntu1)" that's a pre-release package

This affects me too. Is there a fix, such as copying the file from elsewhere?

karbon-kde4 works for me, what applications isn't working for you?

Kontact will not open, it's missing libkdeprint.so.5.

kdelibs5 does not install libkdeprint.so.5, but it's listed as a file in the package. :(

kontact is part of kdepim which was not released with KDE 4.0 so any KDE4 version you have installed is a pre-release package
