The error message:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mysql-server-5.7.postinst: line 143: /usr/share/mysql-common/configure-symlinks: No such file or directory

is trying to run configure-symlinks, which is contained in the mysql-common package. Based on your dpkg history log and terminal log, I do not see mysql-common anywhere.

Can you run `dpkg -l | grep mysql` and get the output?

From Dependencies.txt, you have:

mysql-common 10.0.15+maria-1~trusty [origin: unknown]

So you've replaced Ubuntu's mysql-common with a third party version, which has broken your system.

Since this isn't a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Invalid.

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

I'm sorry, and thank you very much.
It's rather strange that MariaDB replaces mysql-common with no chance to be restored when switching back to Mysql.
I've managed to restore the correct version of mysql-common with aptitude.
