Bug Description

I for the first time installed a snap package via gnome-software, and was asked to init the snap system by entering my credentials/creating an account. After doing that, a Gnome dialog popped up where I should enter my password - I am in Austria and using Ubuntu GNOME in German - but the words there seem Turkish (?) to me - or at least a language I can't understand. See screenshot.

I suppose there was a problem picking the right translation - bu I don't know if this is a snap problem or a gnome-software one - I just picked one to start this bug report here.

Is there any progress on this, or any logs we can provide to help debug? This is (for many people) the first thing they see when installing a snap, and it's a bit alarming to get it in a language we don't recognise. I just experienced it on a new laptop in 17.04.

I don't think the status has changed since the last update. Robert hasn't been able to figure out how to ensure the user's language environment settings get passed through to the correct place.

This was fixed in snapd-glib 1.10, I wasn't seeing it because I'm running newer versions which are currently stalled in the SRU process (bug 1699005). I'll prod someone to help, if you are able to check 1.13 and comment on the bug there that should help. Thanks!

Robert, where is the locale choose coming from in that case? If the version update is too complex to SRU maybe it would be worth doing a backport of the specific bugfix?

Robert Ancell (robert-ancell) wrote :

It was due to invalid .policy file generation. I figured it would be no harder to complete the 1.13 SRU than do another one (which would collide with the 1.13 upload).
