Bug Description

Kubuntu sometimes freezes ramdomly, with CPU usage at 100%. I also posted bug 16891,
stating that it also locks up specifically when I change the ACPI button settings,
perhaps this is related.

Also, I have noticed that sometimes, randomly, I will have a 100% CPU usage for a
while when nothing processor-intensive is running. I don't know if this is related,
perhaps it is a separate bug. I ran top when this occured last, and got this:

top - 03:12:26 up 7 min, 2 users, load average: 1.43, 0.75, 0.34

What I noticed (as a relative noob) was updatedb running, and 96% usage on I/O wait.
This usually goes on for about a minute, and then stopps with no ill effects.

Freeze as in machine needs rebooting?

Updatedb indexes all the files on the disk and will cause high disk and CPU usage.

You said 100% CPU usage, but your top output shows very low CPU usage (but high I/O)

I also get freezes that I suspect are linked to updatedb in some way. My
machine (dual opteron 2GB, MSI Master2-FAR) always freezes overnight. This is
not much of an indicator that updatedb is involved, but because of the problem I
have been experimenting, and it seems that it might be kernel related - i.e.
updatedb is procucing conditions that can't be handled. I think it is also smp
related in my case, since I don't get the problem if I run a non-smp kernel. I
have recently experimented with the 386 smp kernel (2.6.12-9-k7-smp) and managed
to acquire the following oops that suggests that updatedb was running:-
