Pretty sure it's a gdm bug rather than gnome-session, the file is around.

affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu) → gdm (Ubuntu)

Did you try rebooting?

GDM has a bug where it won't recognize any new gnome-session sessions until gdm itself is restarted (which generally only happens when you restart your computer).

@Jeremy, this is a release upgrade and the last task of the upgrade is to reboot.

I don't think this is a duplicate of the other bug; I _can_ see the cog and select other sessions (I have xfce, xubuntu, Ubuntu on x11, i3, i3-debug available), what I suddenly cannot do is launch ubuntu-wayland which was my default.

As the original reporter, it is a duplicate. I tried to reproduce using a different graphics driver in a qemu VM and the cog is there with the 3 expected entries.
