pretty version of plymouth won't accept passphrase

Bug Description

On first boot I am unable to enter my passphrase for my encrypted partition for a fresh artful install. Switching to a tty and then back to tty7 I do not see the same dialog / screen and only see my passphrase. On the second boot I then receive the text version of plymouth and can enter my passphrase.

This also happened to me after install Ubuntu 16.04.3 so perhaps it something with my virtual machine setup.

I think this is likely VM setup: I have installed a new system with the 20170919 image (a Thinkpad T450p), and the plymouth screen responds correctly. I will try to reproduce this in a VM here.

From what I can tell this only happens when I have the video configured for VGA, with QXL I am able to enter the passphrase at with pretty plymouth.

I can also enter my passphrase when using the Cirrus driver, but then something else with the boot hangs.

I don't know if it is related but I've also noticed that I cannot use the command "videoinfo" in a grub console if I have the virtual machine setup to use the VGA driver but I can if I use the QXL driver.
