Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This problem only occurs when Visual Effects are turned on. Turning them off fixes it. However, this is still certainly a bug and shouldn't be left alone.

When I move an application window to another workspace, it doesn't show up on the workspace preview panel. When I go to that workspace, however, the application window is there, but the preview of the original workspace disappears. This doesn't always happen, but usually the problem is fixed by restarting my computer. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore; I can't fix it.

When I move to a workspace that has stuff on it (I can't tell until I move to it) everything reappears -- fades in as I have the visual effects on Extra. This shouldn't be happening, obviously. And I know this isn't a normal thing, so there must be a conflict with something else, I imagine?
(All windows also "reappear" -- although they're already up -- when I do a Ctrl+F Find in a cell of Calc. That's just weird.
Additionally, sometimes when I click to switch to a workspace, I become trapped on that workspace, unable to switch as both top and bottom panels have disappeared, as well as the files on the Desktop.)

Thanks for your report, Do you have enabled the Visual Effects? Does it happens without them? Which video card do you have? Do you experience the same with a new user? thanks.

Well, I just made another user ("guest"), and I can't seem to even enable Visual Effects on that one. Don't know why, it just says it can't enable it. Odd. However, when I turn off Visual Effects under my username, the problem goes away. I guess I'll just have to keep them off for now, until we can figure out the problem (if possible).

As for the video card, it's actually integrated graphics: Intel 945G

You should use viewports, workspaces are not supported with compiz.

@Travis,
Well, unless there's ever a viewport preview panel, I don't think I'll be using compiz again. :(

The "workspace switcher" works with viewports. In GNOME terms viewports and virtual desktops (what most people call workspaces) are both "workspaces".

So... when I do a Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right, is that switching between workspaces or viewports? If it's switching between viewports, and Workspace Switcher works with viewports, I should be able to see the previews, but I don't.

The problem is you configured compiz to use virtual desktops which is not supported (in hardy we don't allow you to do this).

Install compizconfig-settings-manager, go to System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, click on General Options, go to the Desktop Size tab, and set Number of Desktops to 1. Then set horizontal size to however many viewports you want.
