Computer freezes up when looking at webpages with AJAX (e.g., digg.com)

Bug Description
OS: Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy on Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop
Browser: Firefox 2.0.0.10
Bug: Every so often my computer will completely freeze up when I am working on a webpage with AJAX.
For example, I try to submit a story at digg.com and then after about 3 minutes, while trying to edit the submission, the computer freezes up.
I've also encountered the "a script on this page is causing problems (|stop script| or |continue|)" prompt while using digg.com
