Thanks for the report.

How do you install the previous version of AWN ?

I did install the deb file manually, a lot of ubuntu users use this software so maybe the upgrade script needs a bit more error handling incase the user already has the software installed.

I don't think Ubuntu and MOTU dev should take care of this type of deb. That's the problem when 3rd party repository are used.
The only solution is to remove manually all 3rd party deb before upgrading. It's a general advise when you upgrade your system.

We cannot take responsibility for the myriad of problems that unofficially and poorly packaged debs can generate. It is always recommended to remove unofficial packages providing the same program as official packages before attempting any kind of upgrade.

I did the same thing... I added the 3rd party repository for AWN from the AWN offical website...

Then Hardy decided it would include AWN in the offical Ubuntu Repositories because so many users installed it manually.

Now, itstead of putting blame .... how about a work around? \

Below is what I did to fix this problem. First you need to fix the BROKEN apt-get / dpkg manager by running.

sudo apt-get remove libawn-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr avant-window-navigator libawn0 awn-manager python-libawn-bzr

Now, remove your OLD awn /etc/apt/sources.list entry (if you had it inserted), because now AWN is in the Ubuntu repositories.

Then update sources:

sudo apt-get update

Next, install AWN via regular hardy UBUNTU respoitories.

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

Or alternative installers via the link below.

Got the same problem now, after the latest intrepid updates... awn was removed from the system during the upgrade (following a reboot awn was gone). As far as I remember I used the official awn-reps to install it. Maybe some libs are still left over, and causing havoc - the problem now is that I can't remove awn or install it. I have two awaiting packages to be upgraded/installed, libawn0 and python-awn, but when I try to do so, I just get this error message about there being 5 broken packages, and when trying to install I get the same error msg as in this topic.

When I run remove awn, I get missing dependency-messages...
