I cannot bring up a full terminal on Ubuntu by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 or any other Function keys. Whenever I do, the screen flashes but still remains on the Desktop.

I am using the vesa driver an have an Nvidia 6200 VGA card.

Yep same happens to me too for all the Ctrl+Alt+F# commands.

I am using intel drivers (i guess) and got the intel x3100 card.

I'm using fglrx on an ATI 9600 and get the same problem. My keyboard driver is "kbd".

1) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn at the login page. Here, the Options->Reboot works.
2) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn once logged in. At the desktop, the running man icon and System->Quit... hang X until Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
