Bug Description
Hardy Alpha 1 CD Live on IBM Thinkpad R31 splash video mode O.K. then screen goes flickering blank.
Ctrl-Alt-F2 command line active. Note on screen displays:
sed: can't read /etc/X11/xorg.conf no such file.
indeed ls /etc/X11 did not show xorg.conf.
I copied dmesg, lspci -vvnn, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log onto USB drive casper-rw. I'll attempt to attach these files in successive notes since I don't know how to attach more than one file to a bug report.
Yesterday I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg which did start the manual screen video mode definitions however it then said it failed to write /etc/X11/
Booted up Feisty which has been installed on the hard drive on this R31 for months and just for jollies copied the xorg.conf onto USB casper-rw.
Booted Hardy Alpha 1 CD Live, screen went flickering blank. Using command line F2 copied Feisty's xorg.conf into Hardy Alpha 1's /etc/X11.
Did sudo killall gdm and startx.
Amazing, it did, first getting the classic X window screen with X in the middle, then switched to the Gnome screen. A couple of "panel switch closed unexpectedly" occurred, then after a couple hiccups came up.
I'm entering this bug from the Thinkpad R31 CD Live Hardy Alpha 1 with Feisty xorg.conf.
Any suggestions anyone? Any further info I can provide?
By the way, MD5SUMS checked, and this same CD runs on my 1.2 gHz Celeron and my 2 gHz IBM NetVista (with some bugs which I've been reporting).
Thanks, Jerry
