Bug Description

typing sudo in the alt-f2 run applications dialog box and then the program name or command freezes the system or just typing sudo and hitting the enter key, both actions also shuts off any sound/music as well if any are playing and where at least/most the keyboard & or mouse (mouse can only move around can't select anything) only works to allow a ctrl+alt+backspace if not and one has dontzap in the xorg conf then the only way out is via the powerbutton on the computer. Gksudo seems to be unaffected by this and does NOT cause a freeze up of the system. This occurs if by defualt and left unchecked "run in terminal" is unchecked and one just presses the enter key on the keyboard.

YES I did a full install of Gutsy and have all updates up to when this bug/freeze was filed.

This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined.

According to the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the next release, Hardy Heron (8.04). If the state of this bug should change such that it qualifies for the SRU process, please contact the person who originally declined it and ask them to re-evaluate it. To help improve the state of this bug see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage

why was this declined for Gutsy:

Bugs which may, under realistic circumstances, directly cause a security vulnerability - i'm guessing Freeze the system - easy - anyone - Local DDS by local user:
Bugs which represent severe regressions from the previous release of Ubuntu -n/a
Bugs which may, under realistic circumstances, directly cause a loss of user data: can if anyone is working on any data uses the run applications dialog box & then accidently types sudo instead of gksudo = data lost or someone in somewhere public someone can walk by or use the compuer and freeze the systems that simply on any account.

The most important being esp. if a public place has ctrl + alt + backspace disabled it will require loss of work - and a press of the computers power button.. I suggest this be fixed in gutsy itself if it can't i'd like to know exactly why.

hmm i think i know why - hardy heron is more important at this moment because of LTS thing :/ and probably the fix will rwquire a whole new gnome version...

And Also it seems that you're the only person facing this problem the bug is not confirmed by someone else yet. Also that works fine in my desktop with Gutsy and Hardy, and it's probably not a gnome-panel bug. Is there anything on /var/log/Xorg.log.0 that may indicate something on the hang?

i stopped all startup programs via session manager, undid some folders i rooted in home, disabled firewall, changed themes, & tried it in the user root, user root is fine, :( and not that I can tell no nothing in the /var/log/xorg.conf file i think.. u can close this bug then if it's not happening on ur end in Gutsy :sigh: it must be only my end... i'm uploading a copy of the xorg.log anyway just in case..

can you try if that's still an issue in hardy?

sorry but i'm on not using Hardy Heron. Alas awhile back I switched to kubuntu of which i haven't seen the problem (as far as I know), also the reaon i've not been posting is because i'm updated a few things or so on my own that would dis-qualify me for reporting bugs, however I could help others I guess..

nontheless this bug can be closed. :)
