Bug Description

I installed all the latest updates as of December 9, 2007 (I have all the repositories enabled in Software Sources, but haven't added any new ones). After restart, the GTK2+ theme was reset to an ugly-looking one. After some time, I get the error (maybe while trying to open 'Appearance' dialog) that gnome-settings-daemon could not be started, maybe because some other (KDE) settings daemon might be running. However, I do not have KDE (or kdelibs) installed on my pc. I formatted the partition and did a fresh install of Ubuntu. I did a complete update again and the problem happened again. I am guessing that maybe some update is breaking my Ubuntu installation, though I am not sure where exactly.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Fresh install of Ubuntu
2) Set custom theme.
3) [Install NVidia restricted drivers]
4) Do a complete system update
5) Restart

Faulty behavior (as far as I have observed):
1) GTK2+ themes failing to load/persist
2) Audio is not playing
3) System crashes while shutdown. Have to power off manually.

System Information:
Ubuntu 64-bit Edition (x86_64) on
Intel Pentium D810 2.8GHz
2GB DDR2 667 MHz
250GB SATA with / and /home on separate partitions
NVidia 8600GT 512MB (latest repository drivers installed - 100.x)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
