Gutsy broken after upgrade

Bug Description
I installed all the latest updates as of December 9, 2007 (I have all the repositories enabled in Software Sources, but haven't added any new ones). After restart, the GTK2+ theme was reset to an ugly-looking one. After some time, I get the error (maybe while trying to open 'Appearance' dialog) that gnome-settings-
Steps to reproduce:
1) Fresh install of Ubuntu
2) Set custom theme.
3) [Install NVidia restricted drivers]
4) Do a complete system update
5) Restart
Faulty behavior (as far as I have observed):
1) GTK2+ themes failing to load/persist
2) Audio is not playing
3) System crashes while shutdown. Have to power off manually.
System Information:
Ubuntu 64-bit Edition (x86_64) on
Intel Pentium D810 2.8GHz
2GB DDR2 667 MHz
250GB SATA with / and /home on separate partitions
NVidia 8600GT 512MB (latest repository drivers installed - 100.x)
