No boot graphic or status bar when booting with nVidia 8400M GS on Sony Vaio SZ650N

Bug Description
When I boot my notebook in SPEED mode (nVidia 8400M GS), I get a black screen until the graphical login screen - there is no 'ubuntu' with status bar beneath, indicating that boot is proceeding. The boot display graphic works fine when I boot in STAMINA mode (Intel 965 / GMA X3100). This affects Gutsy, all updates applied.
