Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

The touchpad is not detected and configured by X either within the LiveCD environment, or within the resulting installation. The synaptics entries are absent from xorg.conf. This is visibly demonstrated in the desktop environment, by the absence of the touchpad tab in gnome-mouse-properties.

This issue was not present in Gutsy. The laptop the bug presents on is an Inspiron 1420. Laptop testing results for Gutsy can be found here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron1420

This bug may be similar to #40503 and #28648, but is probably related to the switch to xorg 7.3.

The issue can be manually resolved by editing xorg.conf. The touchpad tab in gnome-mouse-properties is present afterwards.

The output of lspci -nn | grep VGA is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS [10de:0427] (rev a1)

Additional information to be attached following the initial report, if there are any additional questions or requests for information, they will be answered promptly.

The xorg.conf previously attached, was the corrected version used to manually configure the touchpad. This version is the one that was present originally after X initially started.

For sake of clarity, I'm adding additional information. With the default setup, the touchpad does work. But it creates erratic jumping, which is a pain when typing text, forcing the user to constantly go back and correct if they are touch typists (i.e. don't watch the screen when typing). This is why it's important the touchpad be identified within the xorg system, because then the touchpad tab is visible in gnome-mouse-properties. Then the touchpad doubleclick functionality can be disabled, which prevents the erratic mouse movements.

Further experimentation shows that both the "Synaptics Touchpad" InputDevice section, and related entry in ServerLayout are required for the "Touchpad" tab to be created in gnome-mouse-properties. The ServerLayout section is also not created by the default system, and must be created.
