linux-image-3.13.0-151-generic fails to boot

Bug Description

Our machine rebooted over the weekend and fails to boot the new 3.13.0-151-generic kernel.

I have fallen back to 3.13.0-149-generic kernel in the meantime.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

I have the same problem with 3.13.0-151-generic on Xubuntu 14.04.0 x86. The computer updated automatically and, after a reboot, the laptop was unbootable.

The GRUB boot menu is displayed with 'Ubuntu' listed first. If I select it or if the countdown reaches zero, the computer screen turns black, restarts, and then the BIOS screen is displayed again after which the GRUB boot menu is back.

The second option in the GRUB boot menu, 'Advanced options for Ubuntu', lists kernel -151 and its recovery mode, neither of which work. It always ends in a boot-loop. 3.13.0-149 and its recovery mode were listed below and work without issues.

I've taken the drastic measure of disabling all updates and also purged linux-headers-3.13.0-151-generic, linux-generic, linux-image-3.13.0-151-generic, linux-image-extra-3.13.0-151-generic, linux-image-generic, linux-tools-common, linux-tools-generic, etc.
