Power management broken on Dell Latitude D531

Bug Description

Running Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Latitude D531 and, after installing the odds and sods needed to get the sound, video and networking up, everything seems to work well with one exception: the power management.
When set to standby (S1) and closing the lid it will go into standby and then immediately wake up again.
When set to mem (S3), it appears to suspend but then won't wake up. The power light is on solidly and nothing responds. All you can do is hold down the power button for 10 seconds until it switches off.
ACPI is something I know nothing about and consequently I've no idea how to go about debugging it.
