I have tried installing linux-386 instead with no success.

I have tried building alsa using the module-assistant with no success.

Sound worked fine under Feisty for amd64.

Sound also worked fine when I upgraded Feisty for amd64 to Gutsy.

The problem only arose when I did a fresh install using the 32 bit operating system.

I have spent some time fiddling around with alsamixer, unmuting everything and then remuting front. The sound then worked OK. I then unmuted front again and sound continued to work OK. Not quite sure what is going on with that but it did seem to result in good sound again.
