Bug Description

The problem affects only files that are read-only, and that have no title tag defined. Steps to reproduce:
1. highlight such a file
2. select the "Edit Tag 'Title'" item from the context (pop-up) menu
3. press Enter, thereby accepting the change to the name -- even if there was none
4. a pop-up appears, telling that the tag cannot be changed. Up till now, everything is normal
5. the Title column of the file in the song list becomes empty

The title is not forgotten; if the file is started, it will appear in the big popup, or in the small popup, that appears if the mouse is moved over the icon in the notification area on the tray. However, it will remain empty in the song list.

I am running Kubuntu Gutsy. Amarok is version 2:1.4.7-0ubuntu3.

Hi,

amarok (1.4.3) does not prevent the user that he tag-edit files, that are read-only. Of course it is a bit stupid trying to do it. But imagine this worst case:
You copied 100 mp3 three years ago from a CDR into your home. Of course you forgot, that they are read-only and now you start to tag 100 files with the 'Edit Tag Information ...' Dialog. After 30 minutes hard work everything is tagged and you click 'save & close'. Boom! You get an error message and all your changes are lost!

I found two reports, which describe this problem as a side node, but they unfortunetely got closed without fixing this specific issue:
Bug 110299
Bug 131274

Best regards
Georg Sauthoff

IMO this would really be an improvement. Fortunately this didn't happen to me (yet?).

I've tried to reproduce the bug, and I do steps 1-4 but the the title still appears properly. I'm using Kubuntu Gutsy same Amarok version as you.

Are you sure the file was read-only, and there was no title tag defined for it (so the file name is written in the title column)? I could reproduce this error on 2 machines.

One more thing: it was an mp3 file. I don't know what other details may be important...

I misunderstood you, so i was just changing the title, I removed the title so the file name was showing and when I tried to change it it disappeared. So the bug is confirmed.

I've checked this bug with upstream and they've been aware of it for some time, actually 10 months, so you might have to wait some more for a fix, it's not a showstopper bug but never the less it ought to be fixed, and hopefully the amarok team will get on it as soon as possible. And thanks for the report, hopefully this will give it some more attention.

Sorry about the name, I saw no way to edit it, shouldn't be doing these things late at night. I managed to file a duplicate (!), so it's been marked as a duplicate, and invalidated, but I'll post to the real bug report, where I will post a link to this one and spell your name properly.

Thank you for the bug report and for your patience.

Amarok 1.4.x is in bugfix-only mode as development is focused on Amarok 2. Unfortunately your bug will very likely not get fixed, as the risk of regressions is too high and the Amarok developers do not have the resources for it. Thank you for your report though.

We should make sure this is not a problem in Amarok 2.

Closing correctly as Amarok 1.x is unmaintained since quite some time anyway.
