Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

The "ata_generic" and "pata_sis" modules fail to load at boot, displaying various "Unknown symbol" messages (see dmesg.txt, attached).

As a result, the hard drive is not recognized and, after pausing for a few minutes, the busybox prompt appears. (just after 70.168279 in dmesg.txt)

At the busybox prompt, typing "modprobe ide-generic" engages the legacy IDE subsystem (at least I gather that's what's going on) which takes us through 305.856722 in dmesg.txt. At that point, typing <CTRL>-D causes the boot to resume and successfully complete.

lspci output also attached. If you need any further information to diagnose the problem, please let me know.

Love your work, folks.

I might also add that the installed headers are "linux-headers-2.6.22-14-generic", if that's relevant.

Hi Ronald,

Sorry for the delayed response. We're actively developing the Hardy kernel for the upcoming LTS release. I'd like to know if this issue still exists in the latest Hardy Alpha release. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks!
