Periodic hangs/high cpu usage

Bug Description

My computer goes into a soft hang every few seconds. A key press or mouse movement wakes the system up but causes high cpu load >50%. No errors are displayed in dmesg or other logs. The last kernel which worked well for me was feisty 2.6.20-16. This seems to be due to cpu frequency scaling in newer kernels. With the latest hardy kernel, the system is able to boot completely. The problem still occurs in X and during shutdown. Booting with "nohz=off" seems to stop the problem from occurring. With gutsy kernels, the system hangs multiple times during boot or shutdown requiring a key press to continue.

Hardware:
Samsung R20 laptop, Core Duo T2250 1.73GHz, 768MB, Ati X1250 IGP

This problem has been reported in the forums before but I didn't find any bug report, e.g.

Fil, can you confirm this:
With latest kernel from Hardy, this bug only affects the system after suspend/hibernate. It is not happening on "first boot".

Should I attach any file? Make any test?
Thanks

ps: I'm using radeonhd as graphic driver

No change for me in 2.6.24-12 or -13. This also happens on a clean boot, not just after suspend/hibernate.

Regarding the other bug, I have never had a boot hang on this machine with a 2.6.24 kernel. The problem only appears after X has started. But this is HPET related. Booting with "hpet=disable" works fine.

This is happening to me in 8.04, kernel image 2.6.24-16 generic, seems to be solved with hpet=disable. It is with a Samsung r20 laptop. Let me know if you want any more info or to test something.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I'm unable to reproduce this with 2.6.27-2.
Definitely still happens with 2.6.26-*.

The feedback here sounds good. I'm marking this "Fix Released" for the 2.6.27 Intrepid kernel. If you notice any regressions with this prior to Intrepid's final release feel free to set the status back to "New". Thanks.
