Bug Description

Hi

I have recently installed Ubuntu gutsy on my sony vaio sz premium. My problem is when I run compiz my laptop crashes at random times. Sometimes one hour later, sometimes 10 hours later. I only installed supported programs using the add/remove panel.
Specs: Intel core suo t7200 2.0 ghz
1gb ram
nvidia geforce go 7400 GPU

I am definite it is compiz because whenever its disabled, it never crashes for days.

Please help, thanks in advance

This is a bug in the proprietary nVidia drivers. I've marked it as a duplicate of the main bug.

Your options are:
1) disable one of your two CPU cores (by passing maxcpus=1 to the kernel, for example. You can do this by editing your /boot/grub/menu.list file)
2) disable compiz.

Obviously I'd recommend disabling compiz if the lockups are too annoying.

Secondly, bugs are not the right place to ask questions - bugs are to inform the developers that something's wrong, and help them to find and fix it. Questions are more likely to be answered by using one of the support channels: «answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu» or «ubuntuforums.org».
