Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-sound-base
I upgraded the kernel today, now I have no sound.
I used to use pulseaudio, so I switched back to alsa in any case, but no chance.
Everything looks OK, no application complains about the sound, I can use the sound mixer, etc. Just no sound in either the high speakers or through earphones.
At boot, I can hear the "click" when the sound card is activated.
I followed the "Sound Troubleshooting" wiki page but it was no help. I just have to boot on the 2.6.24-3 kernel to have sound back.
I suppressed my ~/.asoundrc* files with no change.
I filed the bug against linux-sound-base, but it's only a guess.

I misread the changelog but there was a hda_intel change between -3 and -4, from upstream:
* hda_intel suspend latency: shorten codec read

The problem is know upstream: http://
The incriminated patch was reverted.

Then it will be fixed in 2.6.24-5-generic. Thanks for looking into this
problem.

Problem confirmed here on a dell 1420n on alpha 3. Lost sound after kernel upgrade. Sounds like this is fixed and in the pipeline already.
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #6 |
Just upgraded to 2.6.24-5. Sound still broken. Setting status back to 'Confirmed'
Sounds works only on 2.6.24-3 kernel

Yes it is. I checked the changelog, the faulty patch is still listed in the upstream changes. It should have been reverted.
And now I don't have the -3 kernel anymore, I can't listen to music. :-(

Don't bother to paste your configuration: it's known and fixed upstream, it just requires a sync.
Sadly enough, the -5 revision didn't include it. Now the the 2.6.24 kernel is officially out, I hope we'll soon have a stable package and be able to enjoy music again.

I found a work-around... While playing a video (I used a Youtube Clip), suspend the computer. Once fully suspended, wake the computer and Vola! Sound! Sucks, but it works for me.
By the way, any idea when a fix is coming to Hard? Thanks!
AJ (akertis) wrote : | #13 |
I can also confirm that this workaround works for me on my vostro 1400 that also has the sigmatel 9228.
Greg2b (greg2b) wrote : | #14 |
This "workaround" worked for me too, expect now most videos have a slight delay in audio/video sync, using STAC92xx.

(As a note, please file bugs in hardy's kernel against the "linux" source package. This reported issue is _only_ relevant if you've used module-assistant with alsa-source.)
There's a specific quirk for 0x10280209 in upstream 1.0.16 (now final as of some hours ago). The quirk is also present in the alsa-driver source I uploaded some hours ago. Please report feedback whether the issue is present in today's alsa-source binary package (I'm fairly sure it won't be present).

Everything is fixed here for me now!
Sound works great, and i don't know if it's only me but the sound is coming out clearer and not showing the staticy high pitches it had played before on full volume.
David Roth (davidroth) wrote : | #17 |
I still don't have any sound after my last update. Does anyone have any suggestions? Daniel, I read your last post and I am unsure of your exact meaning... Are you saying we should be reporting this issue elsewhere? Thanks for you help!
AJ (akertis) wrote : | #18 |
I'm not sure what Daniel meant and i'm not sure which package actually has the driver for hda-intel. Is that provided by alsa-source because I was under the impression that was just for building it yourself but I was able to get it working finally but just compiling the new 1.0.16 drivers from alsa-drivers source from alsa itself. The newest of alsa-source that shows up for me is rc2 from the hardy repo. So which package in the hardy repo is supposed to have the fix exactly?
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #19 |
Argh. Just updated to 2.6.24-7, and -still- no sound. Why has this been marked 'Fix Released' twice now with no actual fix being released?
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #20 |
Note that this problem seems to be in the kernel, not alsa-driver, unless that package is somehow included in the kernel. Sound still works fine in 2.6.24-3. Setting back to confirmed, unless someone can explain why this issue is not fixed by a standard apt-get upgrade. I haven't done anything with module-assistant or alsa-source, so I don't think that is relevant to the issue of sound being broken in all kernels after 2.6.24.3.

I'm having the same problem (LG-S1-pro laptop, Intel HD audio). While working on getting decent diagnostics, I stumbeled across error messages sometimes popping up on the the console giving me "ALSA lib control.
Any ideas? Still no sound in 2.6.24-7
Bernhard Gehl (bernhard-gehl) wrote : | #24 |
Ok, I've got it working now. First I rebuilt all alsa-modules using the module assistant and then I added the line "options snd-hda-intel model=lg" to /etc/modprobe.
There seems to be some buildup of config fiiles in that directory, that might cause problems...
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #25 |
After noticing to my surprise that sound was suddenly working in the latest kernel, I tried a reboot to see if it would stay fixed. Broken again after reboot. So I tried suspending and sound still not working. Finally, trying a trick mentioned earlier in this thread, I played an audio file in totem-gstreamer and then suspended again. This time when I came back, the audio started playing!
So, I can confirm the workaround, but this issue not fixed. I suppose when I get desperate I'll try 'rebuilding the alsa modules with the module assistant', and the other steps detailed by others, but that seems more like fixing the problem myself than having it fixed in Ubuntu. Especially given the comment from a fresh upgrader from gutsy that he also lost sound... Having users rebuild modules to get sound probably isn't an acceptable final outcome for hardy.

Ok, I upgraded alsa with yesterday's update release and sound is gone again. While the /etc/modprobe.
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #28 |
Confirmed. I've now lost sound on all kernels, including 2.6.24-3. Seems there are now multiple severe bugs.
Ryan Sinn (ryan-sinn) wrote : | #29 |
I've updated to the latest 2.6.24-8 kernel and the problem is happening...
When I was running 2.4.24-4 fresh from the Alpha4 install CD things were working fine. After the update things worked until I restarted (2nd time) after installing 2.4.24-8.
I've tried installing PulseAudio... no good... then I found this bug report and now I know there's not much I can do.
I'm going to try to rev back to -4 and see if that fixes it... if not, I might rebuild the alsa drivers myself...
I'm running a ThinkPad X61t with the Intel HDA Sound Card
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #30 |
The 'suspend while playing media' trick seems to work again now on 2.6.24-8, so I'm using that workaround until this bug's boat comes in.
Ryan Sinn (ryan-sinn) wrote : | #31 |
I talked to the contributor that has committed the next release, 1.0.16r2 , to the upstream.
He said that he is aware of the issue and that the new release package should fix this problem. The new package has been built and is currently being pushed to the repository mirrors.
This is not a problem with the kernel... this is a problem with the alsa libraries. Building the alsa-modules from source with module-assistant does not fix this since the problem is with the actual alsa code.
You can download the source for the next release here:

Well, my sound is gone again with kernel 2.6.24-10 (and related packages) as well as alsa-base 1.0.16-0ubuntu3. Anything I can do for helpful diagnostics?
Grillo (novalkar) wrote : | #33 |
Got the same problem, my system is a Dell Vostro 1400 with a HDA Intel Sound card and the 2.6.24-11-386 kernel.
The problem fixes by imputing "alsa reload" after killing all the programs that are using sound.
Thom Pischke (thom-pischke) wrote : | #34 |
I'm a little worried that months have gone by and this still isn't fixed, or even seeing any recent activity. Sound is STILL not working properly on a system that should be among the easiest to support. (Dell Inspiron 1420n)
At least the problem is no longer rooted in the kernel, since suspending while playing media can kickstart sound, but this still needs a real fix.
Ryan Sinn (ryan-sinn) wrote : | #35 |
Apparently there was a bug where the linux sound "system" would put the card in a very BAD state... I could not get my sound back even by reinstalling.
The fix, believe it or not, was to boot into Windows which reset the sound card on boot -- then sound worked fine.
I had the instance when sound would stop and even restarting the system or reseting the alsa settings or recompiling the alsa drivers would not fix the issue.
However... every time the problem could be simply fixed by booting into windows, logging into my profile and then restarting into linux.
AGAIN, restarting the system and booting back into Linux w/o booting into Windows would not fix the problem.
Lechuan (lechuan) wrote : | #36 |
I am no programmer, but your solution seems quite similar to the 'work-around' described above, play some sound, suspend, and resume. It works for me. I'm using kernel 2.6.24-11-generic.
Ryan Sinn (ryan-sinn) wrote : | #38 |
The lack of sound (even though everything seems to be working and EQs show that sound is playing) issue has not been a problem for the last 2+ weeks.
Lechuan (lechuan) wrote : | #39 |
Changed the options in
/etc/modprobe.
according to https:/
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout
And now I get sound at startup.
Ryan Sinn (ryan-sinn) wrote : | #40 |
it must be something unique to your card because when I talked to the developer about setting options in the 'alsa-base' file he said we shouldn't have to do that.
Lechuan (lechuan) wrote : | #41 |
I'm not sure, but I'm using a Dell Vostro 1400 with no customization, and was using 5stack as described in Bug #197394. Sound worked for me with 5stack in Gutsy. I don't know if it's just coincidence, but it may be useful information after all.
sancheztavo (sancheztavo) wrote : | #42 |
Sound broke in my pc when I upgraded from kernel 2.6.24-11 to 2.6.24-12. And the problem exists in both -generic and -i386. I have an onboard soundcard (It's a nforce2 motherboard and it uses the ac97 sound module). I have seen that I can't load now the module "soundcore", it existed in 2.6.24-11 but it doesn't exist now in 2.6.24-12, and it seems to be required to load module "snd".

OMS. I wish i saw this thread a few days ago. I have been wracking my brains out trying to fix this problem. I lost my sound after updating to a new kernal the other day. The sad thing is, i am pretty sure i have made everything even worse trying to find a soultion. Dammit. When is this going to be fixed... kind of ridiculous...
Got the same problem, my system is a Dell Vostro 1400 with a HDA Intel Sound card.
