Bug Description

Binary package hint: extragear-plasma

The KDE 4.0 desktop effect "Thumbnail Asside" doesn't seem to work if the target is running on a separate desktop than the one currently being worked on. I tested this by running a video in Dragon Player, and moving it to my 2nd desktop in a KDE 4.0 session; then, pressed Meta+Ctrl+T to generate a thumbnail preview, and switched to desktop 1. The preview runs from desktop 2, but freezes on desktop 1.

Note: I'm not sure what package includes the desktop effects, and I couldn't choose "I don't know" for whatever reason, so I selected "extragear-plasma".

Searching upstream for a similar report. I couldn't even get Thumbnail Aside working correctly for me today.

Not seeing anything upstream just yet, can you confirm this issue is still happening for you?

I believe I've found how to make it work: if you open System Settings, and click "Desktop", make sure you have the desktop effects enabled, and click "Advanced Options". Once the window opens, you'll see an unchecked option for "Keep thumbnails of hidden windows up to date"; check and apply the setting, and the Thumbnail Asside plugin seems to work from any desktop (as well as previews for minimized windows).

Ahh, that it does. Honestly, that is an annoying piece of eyecandy :)

So, would you consider this isn't a bug? I will leave it up to you to keep this open or to close it.

I just found out there should be updates to this as well with 4.0.2 coming up in a couple of weeks as well. Thanks!

Yes, I no longer consider this a bug; I stream a lot of videos, so I'll usually have them playing on a separate desktop - out of the way - and have their thumbnail(s) playing on the bottom-right of my screen while I work on other projects. I'm looking forward to the 4.0.2 release, and very much forward to 4.1.0 :)

Groovy, I am going to close the bug then, but if you get anything else, go ahead and either file a new one or just reopen this.

I never thought about using it for video though. That is pretty cool. I may have to keep an eye on it then and watch some little videos :) Thanks!
