Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Summary:
I just installed the recent update to xserver-xorg-core (Version 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.3) and the suspend on my laptop stopped working.

Steps to repeat:
I would open the lid, type my password, and my session would open, but after a few seconds the whole system would freeze up, I couldn't even use ctrl-alt-backspace!

Temporary Fix:
I solved the problem by forcing the previous version in Synaptic (select the package, then go to Package - Force Version and select the previous version in the list), however I am a little concerned about doing that as it was an "Important Security Update" fixing things such as memory corruption.

Additional Information:
Microsoft recently did a press release about how corrupted header information in Word and Excel files that corrupted system memory was a big security risk, but I don't know if those are related. There was another post about an update to version 8.2 and how it broke Java applications (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=671020) but apparently update 8.3 fixed that, I also don't know if they are related.

I have also experienced X lock-ups with the new 8.3 xserver-xorg-core. In a period of 2 hours, I had to reboot 3 times due to these lockups. Since downgrading to xserver-xorg-core_1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8_amd64, everything is stable again.

Note that my lock-ups have nothing to do with suspend, but this bug seemed too similar to be a coincidence:
- new problem with 8.3
- X locks up
- fixed by reverting xserver-xorg-core

My specs: Core 2, running 64 bit Gutsy with latest patches, save for xorg-server-core, using "intel" driver

Can you attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the output of lspci -vvnn? Also, I'd like to see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from booting each -12ubuntu8.3 and -12ubuntu8 to see if there are any differences.

Subscribing keescook in case he has insights.
