Enabling snd_ac97_codec powersave mode makes loud pops

Bug Description

In an attempt to maximize power saving on my laptop, I ran powertop and it suggested using this module option:
options snd_ac97_codec power_save=1

Now that this option is enabled, every time some audio is played there is a loud pop from my speakers before the audio begins.

Is this the expected behavior? It is very loud and obnoxious. Is there anything that can be done to remove or soften this pop when and still be able to use powersave mode?

There is also a much more subtle pop when the sound is done playing, or when the last audio application is closed. This one doesn't particularly bother me since it is barely audible, but if that pop could also be removed, that would be awesome.

Ubuntu 8.04 underwent some big audio backend changes. Can you test this under Ubuntu 8.04 (or even the 8.10 betas) and check whether this problem still persists?

My system with snd_hda_intel makes loud popping sounds whenever I suspend and resume it. One of them is loud or severe enough to cause my hi-fi amplifier to go into automatic shutdown mode, and I'm worried that it may damage my speakers.

If I enable power_save=1, as suggested by powertop, then this happens about 2 seconds after any audio finishes playing as well, so I suspect it's related to putting the sound card in or out of suspend mode.

I will report this upstream with this bug# as a reference.
