Bug Description

I'm trying to install 18.04 server with software RAID-1. It reliably crashes every time. The error message requests that I report it to launchpad so I'm reporting it.

Manual partitioning steps:
1. Select disk one and choose make boot device which creates a 512MB /boot/efi partition.
2. Select disk one and make a 16GB partition w/ use-as swap
3. Select disk one and make a partition over all remaining space w/ use-as unformatted
4. Select disk two and create a partition the same size as previous w/ use-as unformatted
5. Select create an MD device and choose partitions from #3 & #4
6. Select new MD device, create partition whole space, format-as ext4, mount point /
7. Select Done, confirm continuing

The install then crashes after a couple of seconds here:
https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/curtin/blob/master/curtin/block/mdadm.py#L177

I've tried dropping out to a shell and deleting all partitions from both disks then rebooting to try the install again but get the same result.

Installing 16.04 server with the old-style installer and an identical partitioning scheme works fine.

Thanks for filing the bug. We'll need some more information to see what's gone wrong.

Would you be able to test the latest version of subiquity to see if it's still not working?

Can you switch to tty2 and extract /var/log/installer/* somehow?

That raises a different problem. Neither port of the system NIC seems to work in the installer. If I boot into the UEFI menu the system gets an IP over DHCP just fine but nothing in the installer. If I drop out to a shell and try to bring the interface up ip addr shows a NO-CARRIER status.

It's a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe that Ubuntu officially claims works with this specific system (https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201812-26701) but as far as I can tell that's wrong or there's been some minor hardware revision that's causing problems.

Can I re-mount the USB drive I'm installing from as read-write while the installer is running? I'm not sure how else to get /var/log/installer/* off the system w/o networking.

Hi Andy,

Please do file a bug on the NIC issues; they certainly should work and the modules should be present.

Currently the installer does not create a persistent location. A few options here are:

1) cat the file to screen and take photos; you won't be the first to submit a bug report with screenshots

2) Depending on your usb disk layout it's possible to do that; you can sudo bash on tty2 to get root there. If you've just copied the iso directly to the USB stick, then the partition layout doesn't have space.

3) You could modify one of the target disks from the live installer; create a partition on the disk, format it with ext4, mount and then copy the /var/log/installer dir to the partition

(Moving the curtin task to Incomplete as well. Please move both back to New once you've provided more information. Thanks!)
