Bug Description

I'm running the latest clock applet in Hardy (up-to-date). If I try to add Birmingham UK as a location (clock applet -> Edit -> 'Locations' tab -> Add -> Find...., then select Europe -> United Kingdom -> Birmingham), then the gnome-panel crashes. Other locations seem to work fine - it's just Birmingham that crashes the panel.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using "/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash" in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

I just experienced this same bug. I am not getting any crash report, however, and I am unable to attach to the gnome-panel process with gdb. This bug needs to be re-opened, however so far I have been unable to determine how to get any debugging information. Hopefully it can be reproduced by another developer.

gnome-panel 1:2.21.92-0ubuntu2
gnome-applets 2.21.92-0ubuntu2

Steps to reproduce:

Click on Clock applet
Click on Edit button next to Locations (no locations currently added)
Click Add button
Click Find button
Select Europe/UK/Midlands/Birmingham
Click OK
Gnome-panel crash

This does not occur if I add London or any other location I have tried so far (not all of them, obviously). I believe it is the same as bug 199756.

I tried to find the source the applet pulls the list of locations from, since I would imagine the bug is related to the data for these specific locations, however I could not figure out what it was using.

Sebastien, you need to stop closing bug reports just because people do not have a crash file! It's still a bug, and of course we need more debugging information, but it should be added to an existing bug report. There's no reason to kludge up the system with multiple reports on the same issue. If you can give me any advice for getting a backtrace from gnome-panel I would certainly be willing to do so, but I imagine you can also reproduce this bug yourself.

I never did manage to get Apport to generate a crash report for this bug, despite intentionally triggering the crash dozens of times.

could be similar to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513284, try to get apport working and send a bug using it though, otherwise it'll not be easy to manager duplicates etc

I enabled apport, and got a crash report for Totem! I think this is a separate bug in Totem not exiting gracefully when gnome-panel crashes. I removed Totem from my panel, then tried to reproduce the bug. gnome-panel crashed as expected, but apport did NOT create a new crash report. So I'm back to where I began.

The gnome bug 513284 does look similar, but hard to tell since he doesn't explain exactly what he did (which city he was adding).

Sorry, I meant Tomboy above, not Totem.

I am experiencing the same problem. I have looked in /var/crash but there is no relevant file to attach.

Are any of you getting crash reports? There seems to be plenty of people with this issue but nobody has able to provide a crash report.

Maybe a developer can try and trigger the crash themselves. It is very repeatable using the instructions above

What fool change status to invalid? Are you stupid? Just try to add one of this city and get a bug.

This issue didn't solved, I get a crash, but I have no idea where I can get a report.
