Bug Description

Binary package hint: lyx

When I tested the alpha3 release of hardy + recent updates on my i386 laptop I found the following packaging problems for the
package Lyx:

I use: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu hardy (development branch)"
The Lyx package is: lyx 1.5.3-1

1. the logo of Lyx does not appear in the Gnome-menus.
2. the text in the toolbar and the menues of Lyx are hardly readable.
(antialiased fonts, I guess this is due to the fact that Lyx uses Qt as a GUI-toolkit?)
3. the tutorial provided by lyx cannot be compiled due to missing latex packages.
While I see that there are possible use-cases where it is handy to have a minimal install
of Lyx it would be great to have an option to install Lyx with the packages that are
required to (latex)-compile the documentation of lyx.
Perhaps it would be good idea to provide a meta package called "Lyx complete" where
the needed packages are pulled from the repositories.

As a workaround for the missing icon one can add the following icon
by using the System/Preferences/Main Menu:
/usr/share/lyx/images/lyx.xpm

Regarding the text in the toolbar and menues, I suggest to look at bug #57578 . Try to remove the ttf-arphic-uming package and see if it improves the quality of menus. As for the lyx logo, I have it in gnome-menus, maybe there's been an update? For (3), perhaps a lyx-minimal package could be created instead, and the default installation could depend on obviously useful packages that almost everybody will want - this is just a suggestion.

Thank you Vincenzo!

Here is an update for my bug-report:
ad 1) logo did not appear in Gnome menu:
I uninstalled the Lyx package (completely remove) via Synaptics and I
installed Lyx again. The logo appears now in the the Gnome-menu as expected.
This issue seems to be resolved. Thank you very much to the developers!

ad 2) Text in the toolbar is hardly readable:
I unistalled the ttf-arphic-uming package as suggested by Vincenzo.
Indeed the qualtiy of the fonts in the Lyx menu is now much better!

Unistalling the ttf-arphic-uming package seems to be a workaround for this problem.

Remaining font issue: The font is rather small and does not fit the look of the fonts that
are used elsewhere. In Feisty this has not been the case - there the Lyx-menu
fonts match the fonts used in other Gnome applications.

ad 3) The suggested (by Vincenzo) solution would meet the requirements of most Lyx users.
The proposed solution can be summarized as follows:

Provide two Lyx packages:
1. Lyx (default) which pulls all dependencies that are typically required and that are required
to compile and print the documentation that is delivered with lyx
2. Lyx-minimal which is suitable for users that do only use lyx (e.g. on a tablet/mobile computer)
to edit lyx documents without a latex system.

Should I open a bug (enhancement) report upstream (Debian)?

A side note: Bug 227303 states LyX icon in Applications menu fails to render (in Hardy).

Problem 3: What LaTeX packages are required to compile the tutorial that are not included by a default install of LyX including recommended packages?
